DAY TO DAY ITINERARY - SOUTHERN AFRICA DISCOVERER

 

Sun   Day 1          SYDNEY / JOHANNESBURG

Tour members depart from their respective home cities by domestic flight to Sydney, where they will join their international flight to Johannesburg. After clearing customs and immigration we make our way to the domestic terminal for our flight to Cape Town, where we arrive mid-evening for a four-night stay .

Mon   Day 2           CAPE TOWN

Today we drive along the Atlantic Ocean to Cape Point. We stop at the interesting fishing port of Hout Bay before continuing along Chapmans Peak Drive to the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point where the Indian and Atlantic oceans meet. After lunch we return to Cape Town along the Indian Ocean side stopping at the Rhodes Memorial scenically situated against the slopes of Table Mountain.

Tue   Day 3         CAPE TOWN

This morning we make our way to Tableview to photograph the famous view of Table Mountain. Located on the Atlantic Ocean, the water is icy cold and from here we continue to Stellenbosch . This Cape Dutch town was founded in 1688. After sightseeing we make our way to Kalk Bay and the Brass Bell restaurant for lunch. The restaurant is famous for its seafood and overlooks the Indian Ocean.

Wed   Day 4          CAPE TOWN

After breakfast we make our way to the Cable Car station for a scenic ride up Table Mountain. Balance of day free to visit the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, the city or the Waterfront.

Thu   Day 5          CAPE TOWN / OKIEP

After breakfast we make our way north, travelling through a pretty fruit-growing area and along the banks of the Olifants River to Clanwilliam. After an early lunch we continue to Okiep for an overnight stay.

Fri   Day 6         OKIEP / FISH RIVER CANYON

This morning we travel to the Orange River, which is the largest in South Africa and forms the border with Namibia. After clearing customs and immigration we make our way to the Fish River Canyon sitated in an unique desert area surrounded by interesting rock formations. After lunch we make our way to the canyon, which is the second-deepest in the world and visited by very few tourists.

Sat   Day 7         FISH RIVER CANYON / WINDHOEK

After an early breakfast we take a long drive through arid country with scattered sheep farms. Small game such as ground squirrels, springbok and klipspringers as well as birdlife are often seen. We reach Windhoek late afternoon for a two-night stay.

Sun   Day 8         WINDHOEK

This morning you will be taken on an orientation tour of Namibia's capital, including the National Assembly and Lutheran Church. After sightseeing we return to our hotel. Balance of day free. In the evening arrangements will be make to visit Joe's Taphaus for dinner and to sample some of Namibia's world-famous beer.

Mon   Day 9          WINDHOEK / ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK

Today we travel north to Otjiwarongo, where we stop for an early lunch. We continue towards Etosha National Park, where our accommodation for two nights is at a family-owned guest farm near Etosha National Park.

Tue   Day 10         ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK

Your accommodation is situated 35 kms from the gate to Etosha National Park, and we spend a full day in the park, which is one of the best in southern Africa. Etosha is well known for the "Big Five" as well as oryx, springbok and other dryland mammals. We return to our lodge mid-afternoon.

Wed   Day 11         TOSHARI / RUNDU

An early departure for Etosha National Park, which we transverse. We depart from the park at Mokuti Gate and reach our destination mid-afternoon. Our lodge is scenically situated on the Okavango River, and Angola is clearly visable on the other side.

Thu   Day 12         RUNDU / KATIMA MUKILO

This morning we commence our drive along the Caprivi Strip, which is a unique German colonial remnant dating back to the end of the 19th century. This 500km-long "finger" of land is at some places no wider than 30 kms. En route we will stop at an interesting Catholic Mission Station, where there will be an opportunity to donate books and pens to a mission school. The Mission Station also has a small but interesting museum. We continue along the Strip to Katima Mulilo for a two-night stay. Our lodge is situated a short distance out of town on the banks of the Zambezi River.

Fri   Day 13          KATIMA MULILO

Free day at our charming lodge. Arrangements will also be made to visit the town and local craft markets. An optional fishing trip chasing the well-known Zambezi tiger fish is another possibility.

Sat   Day 14         KATIMA MULILO / VICTORIA FALLS

Today we cross two borders. We enter Botswana an hour after our departure and travel across the northern part of the country for 130 kms to the Zimbabwe border. After completing formalities we arrive in Victoria Falls early afternoon. Later today you will be take on a tour of the world-famous Victoria Falls, a short walking distance from your hotel.

Sun   Day 15         VICTORIA FALLS / CHOBE NATIONAL PARK

This morning there will be an opportunity to take an optional 12-minute helicopter ride over the Falls from the Zambian side. After lunch we depart for the Botswana border and, after formalities, make our way to our lodge, which is located next to Chobe National Park, for a two-night stay.

Mon   Day 16          CHOBE NATIONAL PARK

Early morning ranger-escorted game drive in Chobe National Park, well known for its big cats. In the afternoon there will be a river activity during which you will see hippo end elephant as well as many other animals which come down to the Chobe River to drink in the late afternoon.

Tue   Day 17         CHOBE NATIONAL PARK / FRANCISTOWN

Early morning ranger-escorted game drive, after which we return to our hotel for breakfast. Subject to road and water conditions, we will visit Makgadikgadi Pans, located on the edge of the Kalahari Desert. From here we continue to Botswana's second-largest city for an overnight stay.

Wed   Day 18         FRANCISTOWN / PILANESBERG NATIONAL PARK

After breakfast we make our way to the South African border and, after formalities, continue to the town of Ellisras for an early lunch. From here we continue to Pilanesberg National Park, the home of the "Big Five".

Thu   Day 19         PILANESBERG NATIONAL PARK

Mid-morning departure for Sun City, where we visit The Lost City. We return to our lodge for an afternoon ranger-escorted game drive. Our lodge is also famous for its interesting and diverse birdlife.

Fri   Day 20          PILANESBERG NATIONAL PARK /  AUSTRALIA

Mid-morning departure for Johannesburg International Airport and your flight to Australia. The journey takes us via the outskirts of South Africa's capital, Pretoria, and we arrive at the airport mid-afternoon.In flight

 

Sat   Day 21          AUSTRALIA

Upon arrival in Australia you will connect to your home destination by domestic flight.

 

 

 OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES:

TIGER FISHING ZAMBEZI RIVER

At Katima Mulilo there is an excellent opportunity to take a two-and-a-half hour tiger fishing trip on the Zambezi River. These famed fighting fish are active during most of the year.

VICTORIA FALLS SCENIC HELICOPTER FLIGHT

A magnificent 12-minute flight over Victoria Falls operates from the Zambian side of the river. The helicopters are purpose built for scenic flights and offer wonderful photo opportunities. The cost of a Zambian visa is included.
